About the Artist

Ann Singsaas is a painter living and creating artwork in Duluth, Minnesota. She enjoys the quiet of the woods and seeks to translate the tranquility found there by painting images evocative of that etherial feeling of the lands and waterways of the Western Great Lakes.

Working in contemporary realism, and bold minimalism. Her watercolors cover a range of natural subjects in woods and water with a focus on the intimate feeling of a small raft of lily pads, the reflection of ripples on a pond, the glow of a few birch trunks or the acrobatics of hummingbirds as they court their flowers. Her oil paintings on hand brushed aluminum are unique to her style and suggest the contrast between the natural subject and industrial material of the background with vegetation seeming to float just above the surface of the metal. This isolation of subject matter invites the viewer to contemplate papery birch bark and stark white trunks, or a few bright berries set off by flat grey metal.

With an education in Biology, Chemistry and Art, she has blended her botanical knowledge with creativity and image making, marrying the two disciplines to share a new view on plant life. Outside of the studio, she continues to participate in art/science collaborations covering subjects such as water issues and environmental conservation. She has curated exhibits throughout the midwest, looking to spark dialog and deepen our understanding of our environment through art.
